Do You Really Need a Storage Unit?

Berkeley Man Moving Boxes into a Storage UnitIf your stuff appears to be taking over your Berkeley rental home, you may be asking if you should rent a storage unit. Nevertheless, before you sign a contract, you should carefully consider your position. Is it really desirable to have a storage unit? Or is there a different method to manage your belongings? To assist you with answering this concern, we’ll go through some of the reasons why you should – or should not – need a storage unit.

Too Much Stuff

Perhaps the main cause why people rent a storage unit is that they have too much stuff. On occasion, this occurs when downsizing to a smaller home, when moving, or when between homes. Some people don’t have space for their collections, and some have inherited items they don’t want or aren’t using now.

However, possessing too much stuff isn’t imperatively a valid reason to rent a storage unit. This is particularly true if you compare the amount you’ll spend on the monthly rent to the value of the items you want to keep. For illustration, spending an extra $100 a month on a storage unit means those items will cost you $1,200 a year to own and never use. Before renting a storage unit, it is important to determine why you want to keep the things you decide to store and, if necessary, study other alternatives to a storage unit.

Storing Valuables

One aspect that can drastically change the equation on value and storage is if you have valuable items you want to keep but don’t have space for them at home for one reason or another. Preferably, if you own high-end valuables, you need to go for climate-controlled storage. Belongings such as artwork, musical instruments, antiques, photos, and electronics can be damaged by heat or cold and must never be kept in an outdoor space.

Creative Alternatives

If you have things you want or need to keep but it doesn’t seem worth the cost of a storage unit, think about other innovative choices to keep your stuff – or not. In a few cases, having too much stuff results in being unwilling to let things go, including items you will probably never use. If you can overcome your attachment to these things, you might be able to sell or give them away instead.

On the other hand, if you have things you can’t throw away but don’t really need a storage unit to keep, try asking a friend to keep or store it for you until you can bring it home. A friend or family member with an empty spare room can utilize the antique furniture, piano, or framed artwork you don’t currently need but want to sustain. Otherwise, get creative with the spaces in your own home to make room for your things. Underneath staircases, attics, and garage shelving can all give usable storage space and permit you to store a few more of your cherished belongings.

Even though there are some situations where a storage unit may be required, for the most part, there are other, less expensive ways to deal with having more stuff than we need.
